Which Website Analytics Actually Matter for Authors?

Website analytics can become overwhelming very quickly.

There are visitors, sessions, engagement, impressions, clicks, countries, devices, conversions and dozens of other numbers. I prefer reducing everything to a few measurements that actually help me decide what to do next.

Where Visitors Come From Matters

The first thing I want to know is what brought someone to the website.

Google, Pinterest, advertising, social platforms and direct visits can all produce very different results.

Country also matters because traffic from different markets can have different advertising value, purchasing behavior and costs. Looking only at the total number of visitors can hide all of that.

Traffic Alone Is Not Enough

A large number of visitors looks good, but I also want to know what they actually did.

Did they open another article? Did they visit the book? Did they register, read free chapters, join the newsletter or eventually purchase something?

A smaller source of traffic that produces more useful actions may be worth considerably more than a much larger source where everyone immediately leaves.

Analytics Should Change Decisions

For me, analytics becomes valuable only when it changes what I do.

If one article category consistently receives more impressions, I can create more around it. If one country converts better, advertising can focus more heavily there. If Pinterest starts producing long-term traffic, I can feed it more content.

The numbers are not there just to look interesting.

They should tell me where the next hour or next dollar has the best chance of producing something useful.
