How Authors Can Turn Website Visitors Into Readers

Getting traffic to an author website is useful, but traffic by itself is not really the goal.

Someone can open an article, read it and disappear forever. The more interesting question is whether the website gives that person a natural reason to discover the books or return later.

Make the Next Step Easy

A visitor should not need to search through several menus to understand what else exists on the website.

If free chapters are available, they should be easy to find. If someone wants updates, the newsletter should be simple to join. If they are interested in the book, there should be a clear path toward reading it.

I prefer giving people options instead of immediately forcing a sale.

Not Everyone Buys Immediately

Someone may discover the website through an article and have no intention of buying a book that day.

That does not make the visit useless.

They may read another article, see Valentine Kingdom several times, return through Pinterest or Google later and eventually decide to try the free chapters.

That is why I think the entire website should work together instead of treating every page as something completely separate.

Build an Audience, Not Just Pageviews

A pageview disappears after it happens.

A reader who remembers the website, joins the newsletter or becomes interested in the story can be worth much more over time.

That is the difference I care about.

Traffic brings people through the door. The website still has to give them a reason to stay.
