Should Authors Offer Free Chapters Before Selling a Book?

I like the idea of letting somebody experience a story before asking them to buy the complete book. A cover can create curiosity and a description can explain what the book is about, but neither can show the reader what actually spending time inside the story feels like. A sample can. That is why I chose to make the opening chapters of The Eternal Prince available before the rest of the book is unlocked. Someone discovering my work for the first time does not have to trust advertising, reviews or promises. They can simply start reading and decide for themselves whether they want to continue.

The Story Should Do the Selling

Marketing can get somebody to the page, but eventually the writing has to take over. If the opening of the book makes someone curious about what happens next, that is much stronger than another sales paragraph telling them the story is good. I actually prefer that because it creates a very clear test. The reader sees the writing style, atmosphere, characters and beginning of the world directly. If it catches them, the next step feels natural. If it does not, buying the full book probably would not have changed that. I would rather give somebody enough information to make a real decision than push for a purchase before they know what they are getting.

Free Chapters Create a Middle Step

This matters even more for an independent author because many visitors will arrive without knowing the name or the series. Asking a stranger to make a purchase immediately creates more resistance than asking them to read something free. The sample creates a middle stage between visitor and customer. Somebody might arrive through Google because they found an unrelated article, notice Valentine Kingdom, open the free chapters and become interested in the story. That is a much smoother path than expecting every visitor to go directly from discovery to payment. It also gives the website something meaningful to offer even to people who are not ready to buy anything that day.

The Sample Still Needs a Clear Boundary

Of course, offering free chapters does not mean giving away most of the book. The sample only needs to be large enough for someone to understand the story and decide whether they want more. For The Eternal Prince, three chapters felt like a reasonable starting point because it gives the reader an actual reading experience while leaving the overwhelming majority of the book ahead. The important moment comes at the end of that sample. If somebody reaches the locked section and genuinely wants to continue, the system has worked exactly as intended. That is why I like free chapters. The strongest argument for purchasing the rest of a story should not be another advertisement. It should be wanting to turn the next page.
