October 25, 2026A Halloween Reading Night for Two
A reading night for two sounds like a good Halloween plan to me because it leaves room for both company and quiet.…

Selling a digital product looks extremely simple from the customer side. They choose the product, pay and receive access. Behind that button, however, several systems have to work together correctly: checkout, payment authorization, order status, customer accounts, taxes, refunds, security and delivery of the purchased content.
For me, the objective is simple: the complicated part should stay behind the website. The customer should barely notice it exists.
Digital products usually do not need the same checkout process as physical products. If nothing is being shipped, asking for unnecessary shipping details or presenting a long form can create friction without adding much value.
A good checkout should clearly show the product, price, payment method and relevant purchase terms. Everything else should have a reason to be there. Every unnecessary field or extra page creates another point where the customer can abandon the purchase.
Transaction fees also matter. Payment processors normally take part of every transaction, meaning the listed price and the amount the seller ultimately keeps are different. Those costs become particularly noticeable with low-priced digital products, where even a relatively small fixed fee represents a larger percentage of the sale.
Processing the payment is only one part of the transaction. The website still has to understand that the payment succeeded and then deliver whatever the customer purchased.
For a downloadable ebook, that could mean providing a secure download. For an online reader, membership or protected library, it may mean changing the customer’s account permissions immediately after payment.
This connection is critical. A successful payment followed by failed access is still a failed customer experience. The buyer does not care whether the problem came from the payment provider, website, membership system or another piece of software. They only know that they paid and did not receive what they expected.
I would rather use one payment flow that works consistently than several impressive options that occasionally fail. The best checkout is almost invisible: choose the product, pay, receive confirmation and immediately get access.
The underlying system can be complicated. The customer’s experience should not be.
