A Season of Change: Autumn and Alexander’s Beginning

Alexander does not begin The Eternal Prince as the person he will eventually become. That matters to me. If a character is going to change, I want there to be a clear memory of who he was before everything became complicated. Autumn became the background to that version of Alexander. Not because every falling leaf needs a hidden meaning, but because the season naturally carries the same sense of transition that surrounds the beginning of his journey.

Before Everything Changes

At the beginning, there are still things Alexander believes he understands. His life has boundaries. The world has rules. People have identities that seem clear. There is comfort in believing that the things around us are exactly what they appear to be.

Then something changes. Usually not all at once. A question appears. Then another. Something that once looked ordinary begins to feel strange. And eventually the old explanation is no longer enough. That gradual movement is important to Alexander’s story.

Autumn Changes Quietly Too

Autumn does something similar. There is rarely one morning where the world suddenly becomes autumn. It happens gradually. The nights become colder. The first leaves change. The sunlight looks different. Rain stays longer on the streets.

Then one day you look around and realize the entire landscape has transformed. I like that kind of change because it feels believable. Alexander’s journey should not feel like someone simply switched one version of him for another. He has to move through it.

The Beauty of Things That Do Not Last

Autumn is also beautiful because it is temporary. The colors that make the season recognizable only exist for a short period. A forest can turn gold and red, then lose almost everything a few weeks later. There is something slightly sad about that. But sadness does not make something less beautiful.

Valentine Kingdom has moments where beauty and darkness exist beside each other. Love can exist beside fear. Power can exist beside vulnerability. Something can be beautiful while also being dangerous. Autumn fits that kind of world.

Alexander Is Still at the Beginning

One thing I never want to forget when thinking about Alexander is how much of his journey still lies ahead of him. The person at the beginning cannot know what the person at the end knows. He cannot understand every consequence yet. He cannot see every connection. And he should not.

Part of following him is discovering those things at the same time he does. That makes the autumn beginning feel almost peaceful in retrospect. The roads may be wet. The weather may be cold. There may already be uncertainty. But Alexander still has no idea just how large his world is about to become.

A Season That Fits the First Step

Autumn does not define Alexander. Neither does one chapter, one decision or one moment. But it is where we first meet him on this journey.

A changing season for a character whose life is about to change. A colder world before things become much more dangerous. And fallen leaves covering roads that still lead somewhere unknown.

For me, that is why autumn feels so natural at the beginning of The Eternal Prince. The world is already transforming. Alexander simply has not realized yet that he is too.
