October 25, 2026A Halloween Reading Night for Two
A reading night for two sounds like a good Halloween plan to me because it leaves room for both company and quiet.…

Authors can publish books without having their own website. There are bookstores, social media platforms and plenty of other places where readers can discover them.
Personally, though, I think having your own website makes more sense if you want to build something that lasts. It gives everything one permanent place instead of spreading your work across platforms you do not control.
This is probably the biggest reason for me.
On your own website, you decide what people see, how everything looks and where visitors go next. There is no algorithm deciding whether your newest post reaches 100 people or 10,000.
If somebody knows your domain, they always know where to find you.
You can change the design, hosting or almost everything behind the website later and still keep the same address.
A website also gives all your work one home.
Books, articles, news, free chapters, newsletters and information about you can all exist in the same place instead of being scattered around the internet.
I think this becomes more useful as an author grows.
One book does not need much. But when there are several books, articles and other things happening around the brand, having one central place starts making much more sense.
I think this is where people sometimes overdo it.
An author website does not need twenty pages and endless animations. A clean homepage, some information about the books, useful articles and a way to stay connected can already be enough.
You can always add more later.
My own website changed many times while I was building it. I understood what I wanted only after actually using it and seeing what felt unnecessary.
I think that is completely normal.
I am not against social media.
It can bring a lot of attention, and some authors are very good at using it.
I just would not want it to be the only place where people can find me. Platforms change, algorithms change and accounts can lose reach very quickly.
For me, social media makes more sense as another path leading people back to my own website.
An author does not absolutely need a website to write or sell books. But if you want to build a name, an audience and something that can grow for years, I think having your own place online is worth it.
